Custom Shelves and Art Organizer for Purple Clouds Bedroom

Last week I posted the first of the DIY projects for my daughter's "Purple Clouds" bedroom. In this post I will show you the 2 new sets of custom shelves and the art organizer for her desk.

First up, we updated the book shelves that my husband made for our daughter's nursery. They were built to closely resemble the BEKVÄM spice racks. We were unable to just use those racks all those years ago because they were always out of stock so we built our own. Here they are in her nursery.

A quick search on Pinterest and you'll find these spice racks are more often used for books than they are for actual spices!

So with this update I cut out 2 cloud shapes from foam-core for each shelf. Glued them together and wrapped the edge in this copper tape. I covered each front in marble contact paper and then I used double-sided tape to attach the clouds to the bookshelves. And this is what they look like now!

These shelves are easily one of my favourite DIY projects from this room and they were also one of the easiest. This contact paper looks very realistic and the copper tape just adds that little bit of pink shine that also works with the bedside lampshade from IKEA.

We actually did 2 sets of custom shelves for this room. Here are the others.

These were seriously easy shelves.

To make these shelves, I sprayed painted these shelf brackets from Lowes with my favourite gold paint and cut a 4' - 1x8 poplar board in half, screwed the brackets to the wall and the boards to the brackets. And that's it! I didn't even finish the wood because I like them just the way they are (you could say they are the Bridget Jones of shelves!)

And last up today is her desk area. My daughter just turned 4 so this desk is a perfect fit and we'll get a bigger desk when she gets older. Best of all, it was a hand-me-down from her cousins so it was FREE! I used this baking cooling tray sprayed with this gold paint (I told you it was my favourite!) and used clear 3M hooks to attach it to the wall. I got these mini clothes pins and bingo-bango - easy artwork display! The last thing I did here was go to the dollar store and get a clear acrylic organizer for her crayons and clothes pins. The best part about this project is that if you want a bigger one, you could mount more than 1 rack side-by-side to get a bigger surface.

With a stainless steel fridge that ISN'T magnetic, the other benefit of this art organizer is that we can use magnets with it!
