This post is about my master bedroom walk-in closet. This closet was not very functional and was definitely not very pretty. With a little paint, a new layout and some new shelves, this closet can finally function efficiently and look great doing it!
The old layout used one wire shelf all the way across the back wall with a second wire shelf below going approx. 2/3 of the way across creating both double hanging space as well as a gap for single hanging space for longer clothes like suits and dresses. In the corner was a single tower of shelves that never came close to fitting all of the clothes it needed to. And the event that precipitated the makeover?! The shelves fell out of the wall! Turns out that none of the screws holding the brackets were in any studs and only a few of them used very small wall anchors to hold them in place!
The new closet layout included a fresh coat of paint to lighten up the small space and a new light fixture to replace the bare bulb.
The double rods on the left provided plenty of hanging space for shirts and the single rod on the right gives even more space for long-hanging clothes than the original layout. But the best part are the 6 custom shelves in the middle. These shelves triple the amount of storage for folded clothes and they look great doing it!
The shelves were made by a company in Oakville, Ontario called Doordoer. They allow you to order custom doors, shelves and other products through their website. Their lead times are excellent. I had these shelves in hand less than 2 weeks after ordering. And the quality is very good.
The shelves are 40 inches wide and 14 inches deep and have rounded corners so you don't have to worry about impaling yourself when reaching for something on one of the rods.
The shelves were installed with rails and brackets purchased at a hardware store and in total, all of the materials for this closet cost a little less than 400 dollars. Very economical for a custom closet that looks this good.
So there it is. It is amazing how a functional layout can completely change a space!
